Emeritus Professor of Internal Medicine and Endocrinology at the University of Valencia and former Chief of the Endocrine and Nutrition Service at the University Hospital in Valencia, Spain.

Prof. Carmena received his M.D. with honours and his Doctorate Thesis Cum Laude , both from the University of Valencia. He did his internship in Internal Medicine at the University Medical Clinic, University of Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany. He received a Fulbright Fellowship and a Juan March Foundation Scholarship to the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota, USA, followed by a residency in Internal Medicine at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis from 1965–1971, and was appointed instructor of Internal Medicine (Endocrinology) at the University of Minnesota for one year. From 1972 to 1974 he was appointed Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Valencia, Spain.

From 1975 to 1982 he chaired the Department of Internal Medicine and was Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Murcia, Spain. From October 1, 1982 to September 30 2010 he was Chief of the Department of Internal Medicine and the Endocrinology Service at the University Hospital and Professor of Internal Medicine-Endocrinology at the University of Valencia.

Prof. Carmena is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. He is a member of Spanish Royal Academy of Medicine, the International and the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine, the American Diabetes Association, the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, and the European Atherosclerosis Society, among others. He was founding member and first President of the Spanish Society of Atherosclerosis (1987–1992). He is an honorary member of the Chilean Society of Endocrinology and Diabetes, the Internal Medicine Society of La Plata (Argentina), the Society of Atherosclerosis of Uruguay and the Venezuelan Society of Atherosclerosis. He has been Visiting Professor at the Universities of Corrientes (Argentina), Montreal (Québec, Canada), Minnesota (Minneapolis, USA) and Tufts (Boston, USA).

Among other honours and distinctions, in 2002 he was awarded the prestigious “King Jaime I Prize in Clinical Medicine”. In 2006 he received the Lilly Foundation Prize in Clinical Research. In 2006 he was elected Chairman of the International Task Force for the Prevention of Coronary Heart Disease, the educational arm of the International Arteriosclerosis Society. In 2007 he was nominated Distinguished Fellow of the International Arteriosclerosis Society. In 2012 he has been nominated Honorary Professor of Medicine at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, in Lima (Perú), and Doctor Honoris Causa at the University of Murcia (Spain).

Prof. Carmena has actively participated as invited speaker in numerous international meetings in Europe, North America, South America, Japan, Australia and North Africa. He has published over 250 papers and his main clinical research interests are lipid metabolism and insulin resistance states, treatment of insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, genetics of dyslipidemias and treatment of dyslipidemia in diabetes.
